CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE AND CELEBRATIONS

CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE AND CELEBRATIONS

In October 1919, Mr. Hyam Mehr, representing 26 Jewish families in the Beach area, purchased the building at 109 Kenilworth Avenue from the Waverly Baptist Church. And so was founded the Beach Hebrew Institute!

At Rosh Hashanah 2019, the shul commences a year-long celebration of our 100th Anniversary. We are planning a Rosh Hashanah kiddush luncheon to kick off the year in style, a torah procession with our Hebrew School children around the time of Simchat Torah, and a musical concert just before Purim featuring two cantors and some of the terrific musical talent within our congregation.  We have also applied to participate in Doors Open Toronto and Jewish Music Week, both in May 2020. And we plan to cap our festive year with a Shulabration in September 2020 when we will also launch a commemorative book on the shul and its congregation across 100 years.

Once the celebrations are finished, we plan to embark on an ambitious renovation project that will make our building fully accessible and improve our kitchen/washroom facilities while maintaining the shul’s beautiful heritage character.  We have already met with LGA Architectural Partners to prepare a feasibility study.

No doubt you are asking yourself, how can I get involved in this exciting project?  Well, worry no more, we have options for you:

  1. Donate to our Centennial Challenge and receive a tax receipt for your donation. The 100th Anniversary Centennial Challenge we launched in 2016 is more than halfway to its goal of $100,000, but now that we have met with the architect it has become clear that more money will be needed, probably in the order of $250,000.

  2. Get involved with the Centennial Committee.  The working group that is planning the year’s celebrations meets once a month and is a convivial group of like-minded individuals.  We need planners but we especially need people prepared to roll up their sleeves and help with publicity and running events.
